FAQs

What supplies do I need for a quilting class?

Supply lists vary by class, but most quilting classes require fabric (often pre-cuts or fat quarters), a rotary cutter, cutting mat, quilting ruler, pins, thread, and basic sewing tools. Some classes specify batting and binding supplies if you'll be finishing the quilt in class. Each class listing includes a detailed supply list, so check before your class date.

Do I need to bring my own sewing machine to a quilting class?

Yes, most quilting classes expect you to bring your own machine. If you don't own one yet, reach out to the store before your class date. We may be able to arrange a loaner machine, but we need advance notice to have it threaded and ready for you.

What is the difference between a quilting class and a longarm quilting class?

Standard quilting classes focus on piecing a quilt top and quilting it on a domestic sewing machine. Longarm classes teach you to quilt on a longarm quilting machine, which is a larger, frame-mounted system for finishing full-size quilts. If you're focused on building quilt tops, the standard quilting classes are the right fit.

What will I learn in a free-motion quilting class?

Free-motion quilting classes teach you to guide fabric freely under the needle rather than following a set stitch path. Introductory classes cover lowering feed dogs, choosing the right foot, and practicing basic patterns like stippling and loops. More advanced sessions add other techniques like ruler work for straight lines and geometric designs. A quilting foot and a machine with the ability to drop the feed dogs are needed for most free-motion classes.
