FAQs

What will I learn in a garment sewing class?

Each class focuses on a specific garment you'll construct from start to finish. Depending on the project, you'll learn pattern layout, fabric cutting, seam finishing, hemming, and techniques like installing zippers or sewing with knit fabrics. Simpler classes will cover the basics, while more advanced ones may get into fitted construction and other techniques like sewing buttonholes.

Do I need garment sewing experience to take a class?

Not for beginner classes. Projects like PJ pants, simple tees, and pillowcase-style tops are designed for sewists who are comfortable with basic machine operation but haven't made clothing before. Classes with fitted garments, knit fabrics, or require multiple different sewing techniques may assume some prior sewing experience. Each listing notes the recommended skill level.

Do I need to bring my own sewing machine?

Most garment classes require you to bring your own machine. If you don't have one available, give the store a call before class and we may be able to get a loaner machine ready for you to use during class.

What supplies do I need for a garment sewing class?

Supply lists are included with each class description. Most garment classes require fabric (type and yardage specified per project), a pattern (sometimes provided), matching thread, scissors, pins, and a seam ripper. Some classes call for interfacing, elastic, zippers, or buttons depending on the garment. A walking foot is helpful for knit fabric projects, and a serger is a bonus for finishing seams, though not usually required.
